Find the expensive friction
Start with the tasks that consume time, cause errors, or block change. A complete rewrite is a large bet. A well-defined bottleneck often gives a smaller, more measurable starting point.
Draw the system boundaries
Document which system owns each record and where data crosses a boundary. Clarify the contracts before introducing a new service or interface. Otherwise, a new platform can reproduce the old ambiguity.
Migrate in slices
Choose one workflow, run it in parallel where practical, and reconcile results. Build a rollback path and observable integration behavior. Repeat the process only after the first slice is understood.
Preserve the knowledge
Existing software often encodes undocumented business rules. Interview the people who operate it and turn those rules into testable behavior before replacing the implementation.
